Juneteenth STEM Expo held in Henrico, VA on June 17, 2023. The event had the collaborative support of the White House Office of Science Technology Policy (OSTP), the White House Initiative on HBCUs (WHI-HBCU), Department of Defense (DoD) STEM, the National Alliance of Resident Services in Assisted and Affordable Housing (NAR-SAAH), the West Point Society of Richmond (WPSR) and Henrico County Parks and Recreation, among others.
The celebration was attended by over 10,000 people including HUD Senior Executives and employees. E- gaming competitions drone, demonstrations and spatial computing activities were conducted to showcase to the HUD initiatives as outlined in our strategic plan.
On the same day, at an earlier time, held at Virginia Union University; hosted by Hezekiah Walker in alliance with NAAR-SAH, STEM Innovation Networks and STEM Expo Juneteenth Celebration 2023; The team engaged 35 youths, 19 participants 10 finalist, and 1 winner at the E-sports Tournament of Champions, on a gaming truck. The winner was awarded a Sony PlayStation 5 in front of an audience of 1,200.
Hezekiah Walker, a renown Grammy-winning Gospel Artist was enthused and expressed the desire to team with STEM to tour nationwide and have the E-sports events at his concerts.
All events were well received, attended, and highly praised for its professionalism, and educational while being fun festivities.
It also provided families with opportunities to access Housing Counseling Agencies and promoted homeownership opportunities.
Overall, this event has had a positive impact on the community, while furthering our commitment to increasing equity and improving customer experience.
The success of the event has also been covered by various press outlets representing the interest of our dedication to serving the community on a personal level.

2023 STREAM PROGRAMS…..STEM 2 STREAMMM!
I Met Dr. Kareem Edouard while I was in undergraduate study at Stanford and he was in his PHD program; we were both student athletes at the time from Miami and Fort Lauderdale Florida. He showed me and taught me many things regarding wholistic well living; and he also taught me and gifted me with my first long board. I am excited to share this Youth Empowerment STREAMMM work, and the opportunity for the youth to have access to some amazing resources that makes learning cool, and spending time with peers fun and exciting. Dr. Edouard has always been passionate about giving back to the underserved communities and has always been a vocal leader in the community that leveraged his passion and skills in technology to expose and provide opportunities for those less fortunate.
One of your goals is motivating students of color to pursue STEM. How do you think ‘Work It Out Wombats!’ can plant that seed?
“The design of the show is really providing a creative approach to look at STEM, but particularly computational thinking and ideas. Computational thinking really is about problem-solving, and engaging in problem-solving is using computer science principles. Those can be complicated on the surface. But thinking about patterns and how to solve problems using patterns are very common ideas. What we do on the show is create creative fun opportunities for young people to see our primary characters, Malik, Zadie, and Zeke, try to be changemakers and solve issues that are in the Treeborhood. Fun is really the heart of the show.” -Dr. Edouard
